Showa Gloves: Matching Hand, Eye, and Foot Protection to the Job

The reaction was from accelerators in the standard nitrile gloves. After that, we switched that entire workstation to accelerator-free N-DEX gloves. This isn't a knock on bulk suppliers. It's a reminder that the cheapest option is only cheap if it actually fits the task.

Glove scenario #1: Chemical handling and wet work

If the main hazard is impact—grinding, cutting, overhead work—safety glasses are usually enough, as long as they meet ANSI Z87.1. They give good coverage and peripheral visibility, and employees actually wear them.

If the hazard is chemical splash, fine dust, or anything that could run behind a lens, you need goggles. Goggles form a seal around the eyes. That's what makes them different. For outdoor and mixed-light work, photochromic safety glasses are a nice middle ground. They darken in sunlight and go clear indoors. That is, if you choose a pair that transitions quickly. Work boots: the category I don't fake

For foot protection, the key is ASTM F2413-18. That's the standard for impact and compression resistance. Whether you choose Nike work boots or another brand, verify the safety toe and puncture-resistant requirements first. A familiar consumer brand doesn't replace a compliance check.

This is also where I practice what I preach about specialization. I don't pretend to be a boot expert, and I don't want a supplier who pretends to be one either. The vendor who says, "Boots aren't our core strength—here's a proper footwear supplier," earns my trust for everything else.

How to figure out which scenario applies to you

If you're not sure where to start, ask yourself these questions:

  1. Is the task wet, oily, or chemical-exposed? If yes, start with the 6110PF or a thicker chemical glove.
  2. Do employees complain about sweat, itching, or irritation? If yes, try accelerator-free N-DEX.
  3. Is there any sharp-edge contact? If yes, move to a rated cut-resistant glove, not a disposable.
  4. Is there splash or fine dust? If yes, use goggles, not glasses.
  5. Is there impact risk or mixed indoor/outdoor lighting? Then glasses, possibly photochromic.
  6. Does the job need a protective toe? Then check the boot for ASTM F2413-18 before caring about the brand.

That's your matrix. It's not fancy, but it works.

The point I want to leave you with: a good PPE program doesn't come from one brand, one price list, or one "best product" blog post. It comes from matching the protection to the actual job. In our facility, Showa is the glove brand I trust. For boots, I look elsewhere. That's not a contradiction. That's what a responsible buyer does.
