PPE Buying FAQ: Showa Gloves, Amazon Safety Shoes, and How a No Pull Harness Works

Every week I review PPE specs before we put them into our catalog or send them to customers. I'm a quality/compliance manager at an industrial safety company, and I've been doing this for about four years. That means I review roughly 300 product specs a year, check test reports, compare labels with actual samples, and reject batches when they don't match. In Q1 2024, I rejected 6% of first deliveries due to label/spec mismatches—not glove failure, just packaging and documentation sloppiness.

Showa gloves cover a lot of ground—cut-resistant, chemical-resistant, arc flash, and disposable styles—so most glove questions start with 'which one?' Some of the questions I keep answering are about Showa gloves. Some are about work boots. One is about a dog harness. I'll take them in the order they come up.

1. What's the difference between Showa 377 nitrile gloves and a regular nitrile glove?

Showa 377 nitrile gloves are the longer-cuff, fully coated nitrile work gloves in the Showa line. On the ones I've reviewed, the nitrile coating covers the whole hand and goes further up the forearm than a standard 9-inch glove. That extra coverage matters when you're working with oil, coolant, or chemical splash, because the liquid doesn't run down into the cuff as easily.

But '377' doesn't mean it's the right glove for every chemical. Nitrile resists oil, grease, and some solvents better than latex or vinyl, and it avoids latex allergy issues, but you still need to check the chemical permeation data for the specific substance you're handling. I won't claim the 377 is cut-resistant or a universal chemical glove. For sharp metal work, you'd want a cut-resistant style; for strong acids, you'd want a chemical-specific glove.

What I can say from experience is that if someone is doing wet, oily assembly or maintenance work, a long fully coated nitrile glove is usually a smarter purchase than a short glove that lets oil run down your arm. Thickness helps with liquids, but not necessarily with cuts. Don't buy a chemical glove for a mechanical hazard and don't buy a cut glove for a chemical hazard.

2. Do Showa 6110pf biodegradable nitrile gloves actually break down?

The Showa 6110pf biodegradable nitrile gloves are part of the N-DEX line. The 'PF' tells you they are powder-free, and they are also accelerator-free. Accelerator-free matters if you have contact dermatitis from standard nitrile gloves. The biodegradable part is the bigger question.

I was skeptical at first. Everything I'd read about biodegradable nitrile suggested it might feel weaker or tear more easily. In our 90-day warehouse trial, they held up well for light and medium tasks. We didn't see weird breakdown during storage. Even after approving the first order, I second-guessed the switch until the 90-day storage check came back clean. But biodegradable doesn't mean compostable in your backyard bin. It usually means the polymer can break down faster in a specific environment, like a landfill, under a test standard such as ASTM D5511.

That's where the FTC Green Guides come in. According to the FTC Green Guides, an environmental claim like 'biodegradable' has to be supported by evidence. If a supplier just says biodegradable without a timeframe or test method, ask for the report. Source: FTC 16 CFR Part 260 (ftc.gov/green-guides). I've rejected products with vague environmental claims before, and I'll do it again.

3. Why keep talking about total cost instead of unit price?

Because unit price is only the iceberg tip. I've watched buyers compare two gloves by the box price and ignore replacement rate, downtime, hand fatigue, and compliance risk. A glove that fails on the first oily part isn't cheap when you're opening a second one 20 minutes later.

It took me about four years and several hundred product reviews to get this through my head: the TCO of a glove, boot, or harness includes the purchase price, the time spent sourcing, training, replacements, rejected work, and the cost of an injury. The cheapest quote can have the highest TCO if it doesn't meet the real hazard. I now calculate TCO before comparing vendor quotes. That habit alone changed how I approve products.

I'm not saying you should ignore price. I'm saying calculate cost per job or cost per shift, not cost per glove. If a better glove lasts longer and prevents one lost-time incident, the math usually solves itself. Usually.

4. Are Avenger work boots okay for a manufacturing floor?

I get this one because Avenger work boots show up often in searches with safety toe styles. My answer is: the brand doesn't certify the boot, the model and label do.

In the US, a true safety toe boot should be marked ASTM F2413-18, and the marking should be permanently printed or embossed inside the boot. If a pair of Avenger work boots has that mark, it meets a recognized standard for impact and compression. If it doesn't, treat it as a regular boot, not as protective footwear.

The surprise wasn't that some budget boots lack the standard. It was how often people couldn't tell me whether their boot had the mark. I can't approve a boot by name alone; I need a spec sheet and a physical sample. If you're buying Avenger work boots, check the label when they arrive and keep the spec sheet.

5. Are Amazon safety shoes a good deal or a gamble?

I have mixed feelings about this. On one hand, Amazon safety shoes are convenient, and for some workers that's the only practical way to order. On the other hand, I've seen listings that show EN ISO 20345 or ASTM markings but ship shoes with no permanent label, or with labels that don't match the listing.

More often than not, if you order Amazon safety shoes and the tongue label is missing, the shoe is not a certified safety shoe. The product description might say safety toe, but the physical product doesn't. It's not that every Amazon listing is fake. It's that the stakes are too high to rely on the advertising.

If you're buying safety shoes on Amazon, look for a permanent ASTM F2413 or EN ISO 20345 marking inside the shoe. If it isn't there, return them. Check the return policy before you order too; a no-return 'safety shoe' is a hidden cost in your TCO. I've done this myself after ordering 'safety' shoes for a quick project and watching the heel label wear off in two weeks.

6. How does a no pull harness work?

This is the weird one, but it comes up because people search for it and sometimes land on safety product pages. A no pull harness works by changing where the leash attaches. On a regular back-clip harness, the dog can pull against the harness with its whole body. On a front-clip no-pull harness, the leash attaches to a ring on the dog's chest, near the sternum.

When the dog pulls forward, the leash tension on that front ring turns the dog's upper body sideways. The forward force gets redirected into a pivot, so pulling becomes awkward instead of effective. It's not a punishment-based tool. It just makes pulling less efficient, which gives the handler a chance to redirect and reward a loose leash position.

I'll admit I was skeptical about including this in a PPE FAQ. But the TCO idea still applies: a harness that slipped or chafed the dog would be more expensive than the one that worked, no matter what the package promised. The same habit—check the standard, check the label, and check what the product actually has to prove its claim—applies to gloves, boots, and dog gear.
