The 36-Hour Safety Scramble: Showa Gloves, Pull-On Work Boots, and a Fire Alarm That Wouldn't Stop Flashing Red

The Call That Started It All

Thursday, 2:47 PM. I was 20 minutes from shutting my laptop. Then the phone rang.

“We have an unannounced safety audit Monday morning,” the plant manager said. “I need 1,200 pairs of Showa gloves by Sunday night.”

Normal turnaround for an order that size is five business days. I had maybe 68 hours. In my role coordinating emergency safety orders for industrial facilities, I’ve handled that kind of request before. Based on our internal data from 200+ rush jobs, the ones that go off the rails almost always fail because of a missing detail, not a slow truck.

Why Showa Gloves Ended Up in the Order

The spec sheet called for a multi-purpose nitrile work glove that could handle food-grade oil and occasional chemical contact. That pointed me to one glove: Showa n-dex free accelerator-free nitrile gloves. They’re made without chemical accelerators, which matters for workers with skin sensitivity, and they give a solid grip in oily conditions. Think fish processing, spraying parts, light chemical splash—that’s the n-dex sweet spot.

But I’m not going to pretend it’s a universal glove. The n-dex is a light-frame nitrile glove. If you’re dipping parts in solvent or handling concentrated acids, you need a heavy chemical-resistant glove with breakthrough time data—not a disposable-feel nitrile. This is the honest limitation part: n-dex-free doesn’t mean chemical-proof. It means free of accelerators.

For the assembly crew, we added something different. Showa Atlas 370 nitrile gloves are a coated work glove with a seamless nylon liner and a nitrile palm coating. They hold up to abrasion, offer decent grip on dry or slightly oily parts, and breathe better than a lined PVC glove. I recommend the Atlas 370 for general parts handling and maintenance work. I don’t recommend it for chemical immersion or electrical work. If you have an arc flash hazard, that’s a completely different glove spec.

OSHA’s hand protection standard (29 CFR 1910.138) says employers must select gloves suitable for the hazards and conditions. That doesn’t mean one glove for every task. It means reading the job.

The Footwear Problem Nobody Anticipated

While we were sorting gloves, the maintenance lead mentioned another problem. Several workers had bought Amazon safety shoes because the company’s standard boot order was stuck in a supply-chain delay. The shoes arrived fast, but after two weeks of walking through machine oil and metal scrap, one pair was already peeling at the toe.

I’m not going to say Amazon safety shoes are always wrong. If you’re working in a dry warehouse with no oil, no sharp debris, and no overhead lifting, an ASTM-rated shoe from an online listing can be a perfectly good budget solution. But in that facility, the crew needed more coverage. We put in a rush order for pull on work boots—slip-on, no laces, composite toe, oil-resistant soles. Pull-on boots won’t win a style award, but they don’t have laces to catch on machinery, and they’re easy to clean at the end of a rough shift.

Again, not everyone needs pull on work boots. If your job involves electrical hazards, you need EH-rated footwear. If you’re mostly at a desk with occasional visits to the floor, a lighter shoe is fine. The point is to match the boot to the worst hazard you’ll meet, not the best-case aisle.

And Why Is My Fire Alarm Flashing Red?

Then the plant manager pointed at the ceiling. “While you’re here,” he said, “why is my fire alarm flashing red? It started doing that yesterday.”

I’m not a certified fire alarm technician, so I gave him the cautious answer. A flashing red light on a fire alarm device can mean several different things. On some systems, the red LED on a smoke detector flashes every 30 to 60 seconds during normal standby. On others, a rapid flash or a solid red light signals an alarm or a trouble condition. A strobe flashing red usually means the alarm is active. A control panel indicator flashing red can mean anything from a low battery to a broken communication line.

So to answer his exact question: “Why is my fire alarm flashing red?” If it’s a smoke detector, look for a device label and the panel address. If the panel shows no active alarm, the flashing detector LED is often just the manufacturer’s status indicator. If the panel shows a trouble or alarm, you need to clear it or call your fire alarm service provider. NFPA 72 sets performance requirements for fire alarm systems, but it doesn’t give one universal color-and-flash code that applies to every brand. The panel is the truth. The flashing light is just a hint.

The superintendent had a dust-covered smoke detector in the break room, by the way. A quick vacuum and a panel reset cleared the trouble. I didn’t charge extra for that, but I made a note to add “check fire alarm panel” to my pre-audit checklist.

What I’d Do Differently

We delivered Sunday morning, about 14 hours before the auditor walked in. The Showa gloves were racked by department, the pull on work boots were on the right feet, and the fire alarm panel was showing no active trouble. The audit went better than the manager expected. But it was closer than it should have been.

Here’s the part I still kick myself over. In that first phone call, I didn’t ask for a photo of the client’s current gloves. If I had, I’d have known their racks were full of a thinner 6-mil nitrile glove, and the n-dex order would have gone in three hours sooner. Instead, we discovered the gap after a second phone call, and I had to rework the delivery schedule.

Now my policy for any rush glove order is simple: send a photo of the current glove, the hazard, and the approximate hours per day a worker will wear it. It takes two minutes on the client’s side and saves hours on mine. Since we started doing that, our re-order rate on emergency deliveries has dropped significantly. I’ve also stopped promising “guaranteed” delivery times. You can’t guarantee a truck. You can only manage the process.

One more honest limitation: this was accurate as of early 2025. Glove lines, boot styles, and fire alarm codes change over time. Verify current specifications and current regulations before you buy. The safety landscape shifts fast, and yesterday’s checklist isn’t always today’s compliance standard.

But the principle stays the same. When the clock is running, the fastest path to a successful emergency order isn’t the biggest rush fee. It’s asking the next question before you assume you have the answer.
