I do quality and brand compliance for a safety equipment company. I review roughly 200 product lines a year—maybe 180, depending on how you count samples—and I've rejected 11% of first deliveries in 2025 for spec mismatches. That isn't a dig at suppliers. It's what happens when someone buys on price alone and assumes the spec sheet is accurate.
A lot of safety buyers expect a single answer for gloves, boots, and fire extinguishers. There isn't one. The right choice depends on your hazard, your frequency of use, and what happens when a product fails.
Three questions before you buy anything
Before you compare prices, answer these:
- What's the primary hazard? Wetness, chemicals, cuts, heat, or just normal wear?
- How often will it be used? Every shift, twice a month, or only on special jobs?
- What happens if it fails? A torn glove, a soaked boot, or a fire that re-ignites?
Now here are the scenarios that most often show up in our reviews.
Scenario 1: You need precision and a comfortable fit
If you're doing inspection, assembly, small-part handling, or any task that requires feel, Showa 7500PF nitrile gloves are my usual recommendation. We compared the 717 against a lower-priced alternative once. The other glove cost about 25% less per box, but it tore more often and generated more hand fatigue. Workers started double-gloving to make it through a shift, which wiped out the savings and made the job less safe.
Here's another thing I check now: environmental claims. If a supplier calls a glove biodegradable, I ask for the test method. Per FTC Green Guides, environmental claims have to be substantiated. Don't pay a premium for a label until you've seen the certificate.
On one big order, I had only 48 hours to confirm the volume before a distributor price increase. Normally I would have run a two-week wear test, but there wasn't time. I went with the 717 because it had already proven itself in smaller batches. In hindsight, that was the right call, but it was a decision made with incomplete information.

The mistake we made early on was assuming any boot would handle water. The budget pull-on boots we bought looked fine, but we skipped waterproofing. After a few weeks, the leather was saturated and every pair felt heavier at the end of the day. Looking back, I should have waterproofed them before day one.
Here's how to waterproof work boots without ruining them:
- Clean off dirt and let them dry overnight at room temperature. Don't put them next to a heater—rapid heat can crack the leather.
- Apply a waterproofing wax or spray made for full-grain leather. Two thin coats are better than one thick coat.
- Let the treatment soak in between coats. Ten minutes is usually enough.
- Test with a few drops of water. If the drops bead up, you're done. If they darken the leather, add another coat.
A tin of waterproofing costs maybe $12. Replacing waterlogged work boots every six months instead of every two years is a much bigger number. That's the value-over-price math I use for every PPE line item.
Scenario 4: You have a hot-oil or commercial kitchen hazard
One more scenario that sometimes gets missed in a glove-and-boot purchase: wet chemical fire extinguishers. If you have a deep fryer, a hot oil conveyor, or any commercial cooking operation, the extinguisher should be a wet chemical fire extinguisher. That's the unit rated for Class K fires. It works by cooling the oil and forming a blanket that prevents re-ignition.
I can only speak to what we've installed in our own facilities, but we use NFPA 10 as the reference for placement. A dry chemical extinguisher is not a substitute for a wet chemical unit when hot oil is on the line.
People sometimes push back because a wet chemical unit costs more than a dry chemical unit. That's the wrong comparison. The real cost is a grease fire that doesn't go out, or the shutdown and inspection after a failed suppression attempt. In my experience, this is a case where higher-function equipment is the lower-total-cost choice.
If you don't have a hot-oil hazard, don't buy one just because a checklist says fire extinguisher. Match the extinguisher to the actual risk, the same way you match gloves to the task.
How to know which scenario fits you
Here's the shortcut I use when I review safety specs:
- Need to feel small parts? Start with Showa 7500PF nitrile gloves.
